The working mom journey is crazy.
A working mom map sounds like a fab idea. Picture a maze of roads not yet traveled, envision twists and turns. Smack dab, in the middle of the map there is a red dot-sticker. The words “you are here” are emblazoned on the top. Doesn’t that sound dreamy? Alas, I am not sure one exists.
I am a working mom who has been trying to have it all for the past 15 years. I am career oriented with ambitions of seeing my professional life exceed my goals. At the same time, I am co-raising, along with my husband, our two kids. Our kids are in their formative years, and I haven’t wanted to miss a thing.
The result is I sometimes question who I am other than a divided being trying not to half-ass my way through life. While I can’t give you a step by step survival guide or a map to deliver you to working mom sainthood, I can impart some perspective and humor to aid you on this trip of a lifetime.
What I’ve learned through years of being a working mom:
-
Life balance means re-prioritizing again and again.
-
Don’t get to the point where you are only seeing what you aren’t doing.
-
Fitness feeds your soul and your sanity.
-
Having a career made me a better mom. Being a mom made me better in my career.
-
I’m a priority too.
-
Laughter is a fantastic drug.
