We are Generation X

We’re not directionless after all

From parenting our kids to cherishing our parents, we are the so-called “directionless” Generation X living in 2018. For the sake of conversation, we’re defining Generation X as those born around 1965-1979. Despite statements from our early years, we aren’t directionless after all. This generation is entrepreneurial, ambitious, confident, resourceful, optimistic, successful.

Terms associated with Generation X

As with any generation, there were many terms used to identify those from Generation X as we grew. Some names recognized us by societal events and referred to us as latchkey kids or children of the climbing divorce rate. This group came of age during uncertain times with fluctuating economies and the introduction of AIDS. Kids of this generation are technologically adept and fun but carried the label of “slackers” in their younger years. Gen Xers have fond memories of their formative years:

• 80’s music

• Cassette tapes

• Feathered hair

• Two working parents (which meant less supervision)

• The Dukes of Hazzard

• Atari

• Hair scrunchies

• Rotary phones

• Encyclopedias

• Friends

Midlife Living

We are the MTV generation who today are in our 40+ years. Wikipedia states: “In midlife, research describes them as active, happy, and achieving work–life balance. The cohort exhibits entrepreneurial tendencies.” However, we’re also trying to make light of the fact that we’re moving closer to retirement. Those who were born into Generation X are trying to accept their bodies are changing, and we’re no longer in our 20’s. We have begun to pay closer attention to our parents and in some cases have cared for them through their later years. Gen-Xers predominantly concentrated on careers into their late 20s before beginning to build a family. We are now a “sandwich generation,” caring for our children and our parents at the same time.

  1. Cause I was born in 66, I think of myself as some Gen x and some of the prior generation – baby boomer? Rule followers, hard workers, traditional. ?? I always feel like I am in between generations. So sad…kidding of course!

No Brady Bunch in Gen x?

    1. How can I forget the Brady Bunch???? I’ve got another post coming set to the tune of the theme song.
