When looks aren’t enough, enter the 40+ arm candy

The term “arm candy” was coined in the early ‘90s when older men brought young (18-25 yr old), long-legged beauties to functions to gain attention or to inspire envy from others. Let’s just admit that the entire arrangement makes some statements: The woman attends because it is a potentially glamorous event, and due to the fact that she is sociable and fun. By bringing her, the man is announcing he needs to boost his ego.

Consider for a moment that there might be a grand reason for having (needing) arm candy. Yes, first impressions do tend to be about looks. If all of this is for his ego though, why not bring someone who can boost his pride from her looks AND her life experience, and character too.

No two people are the same. However, for the sake of considering a “new” kind of arm candy, here’s a review of a typical generation X woman. Women who are 40 years or older were born and raised during the same period with similar cultural influences and core values. Therefore, here are some attributes she will likely exhibit.

The 40+ arm candy is the full package

She’s Secure
She’s lived long enough to know it isn’t all about looks. This 40+-year-old grew up in a time that required independence, self-reliance, adaptability, competence, and confidence.

She’s invested in herself
This mature arm candy has opinions and the life experience to back it up. She delayed marriage and kids to focus on her education and then her career. She is financially self-sufficient and doesn’t expect things handed to her on a silver platter. As a result of having parents who worked too much, this lady works to live.

She’s fun
She isn’t all about work and instead, values time away to bring balance to her life. This potential partner-in-crime is the first to forget the rules and do things her way. She isn’t married to her job and instead sees retiring early and starting a new adventure in another field.

Consider this “new” arm candy instead of the younger edition. But, be careful, this gen-x lady won’t take any bullshit.
